Dads Lose Time in the Language, Not in the Courtroom
If you've been told to expect every other weekend and to be grateful for it, read this before you agree to anything.
Most dads don't lose time because a judge decided against them. They lose it because they signed a plan built on words that only work when everyone cooperates, and then found out what those words mean the first time cooperation stopped.
Every other weekend shouldn't be the default.
What we see most with dads
- Right of first refusal left undefined, so it never actually applies
- Holiday language written around a schedule that assumes mom's household is the default
- Travel and relocation clauses with no notice requirement
- Decision-making written as joint with no tie-breaker, which in practice means whoever moves first wins
- Communication terms that make him look uninvolved on paper when he isn't
Why a Dad Would Hire a Mom
Early in my career, one of my male clients told me exactly why he picked me.
“I hired you because you're a mom, and I want to know your reasoning behind certain things with the kids and co-parenting.”
Smart dad!
